The haunting call of a loon drifts across the lake as mist rises into the cool morning air. A bear, startled by the loon, takes a step back from the water’s edge and then returns to fishing for his breakfast intent on the glittering pickerel lazing just below the water’s surface. As the sun peaks over the rolling hills of rural New Brunswick the guests on the deck of Hideaway Lodge, still half asleep and with a steaming coffee in hand, find it hard to believe that this paradise actually exists in a world so full of asphalt, exhaust and franticness.
Yet, Hideaway Lodge is not a dream. “When we first discovered the Lodge we knew we had found the perfect place,” said current owner and operator David Litwiller. “As we drove up the lane and saw the Lodge with over 250 feet of lakefront & an additional 250 feet available, it just seemed to call out to us.”
“Hideaway Lodge has been a part of life at Woodstock New Brunswick for a long time. The original building started out as a customs building where anyone crossing from the US to Canada had to check in on arrival.” Today the completely renovated and restored Lodge hosts visitors from around the world.
“I have to admit that we had mixed feelings when we decided to sell the Lodge. However, what began as a hobby is now a full-fledged business and needs a new team to take it to the next level. We live in Calgary Alberta, over nine hours by airplane form the Lodge, and we just cannot give the property the attention it really deserves,” explained Litwiller.
It’s easy to see why the current owner has mixed feelings about putting Hideaway Lodge on the market. The nearly 5,000 square foot main Lodge has just undergone a full restoration and renovation. Litwiller, a professional renovator in Calgary who has won Renovator of the Year awards in both Alberta and Canada, personally supervised all of the renovations.
The modernized Lodge features an 80 person liquor license dining room, while the fully licensed pub downstairs can serve 60 and the deck which stretches out over the lake can serve 204. Supported by a professional kitchen and full services there is not much the Lodge can’t host.
“The Lodge has seen just about everything,” continued Litwiller. “We have held weddings here with as many as 350 guests. Each year a local art show attracts over 800 guests to the Lodge to view the work of local artists. Combine that with hunters in the fall and ice fishing and 100’s of miles of trails for snowmobilers in the winter Hideaway Lodge has become a year round destination.”
Ultimately, it is the beauty of New Brunswick that draws the visitors. Located less than two hours from Bangor Maine and just over an hour from Fredericton by car Hideaway Lodge might as well be a world away. As visitors turn down the year round road it is clear that this is no ordinary fishing Lodge or corporate retreat.
Wildlife abounds. Even before parking their car it is likely visitors will have seen a moose, deer, fox or even a bear on or near the Lodge’s property. The pristine lake, which borders both Canada and the United States, offers the promise of abundant small mouth bass, pickerel, salmon and brook trout.
Inside Hideaway Lodge are more surprises for visitors. “Many of our first time guests come expecting rustic and get luxury,” explains Litwiller. “We ensured each of the six guest rooms was provided with comfort and class.”
Behind the scenes Litwiller has put in over $350,000 dollars worth of improvements to the Lodge and its property since taking over. “Today the buildings are all fully winterized. We installed a 200 amp electrical service, new well for water, a commercial kitchen with a walk in cooler, ice maker, beer cooler, heavy duty laundry equipment and a modern septic system.”
Yet, it is hard to believe that guests would even notice the renovations. For the most part they are overwhelmed by the world of nature around them. From the Lodge’s massive deck it is possible to see out into the cove – but not to see anyone else. “The way the Lodge is situated on the cove allows for complete privacy. There are no other buildings visible from the Lodge and no one can see the Lodge until they drive right up to it.”
For those interested in fishing Hideaway Lodge offers a boat dock and professional guide services. “Our licensed and professional guides are able to provide everything from advice to full cleaning and filleting services, packing the freshly caught fish for travel. The same services are available for hunters.”
Litwiller lays out the opportunities for the new owner operator or investor in Hideaway Lodge. “When we came here Hideaway Lodge had over twenty years of history as the local place to get away. With the renovations we have put into the property Hideaway Lodge is now perfect as a corporate retreat, a Bed and Breakfast or even a timeshare property.”
“In addition to the main property a separate lakefront property with four fully renovated and winterized cabins with kitchenettes and private baths is also available for sale. Together the Lodge and cabins makes a very unique and valuable property.”

Litwiller concludes, “Hideaway Lodge is one of those places you find just once in a lifetime. As much as I love every minute I spend there it is just too far away from my life and business in Alberta to give it the attention it really deserves. My hope is that someone will see the Lodge as both a special place and a special business and that they will be able to take it to the next level.”
